Where is it?
The National Forest covers 200 square miles spanning across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire in the heart of England.
Why is it important?
The Forest makes a growing contribution to tackling climate change, absorbing carbon, providing recreational activities and as a valuable source of sustainable timber. It has also boosted the rural economy through new enterprises and job creation as part of a rapidly growing tourism sector.
What's the project's aim?
To link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood by increasing woodland cover to about one third within its boundary and to transform the area into a rich mosaic of land uses for the benefit of the community. It is a national example of how forestry can be 'much more than just trees'.
Who's involved?
The National Forest Company, sponsored by Defra is spearheading the initiative with the help of local people, landowners, private businesses and public and voluntary sector bodies.
What's happening there?
Nearly 8 millionn trees have been planted over the past decade taking the total woodland cover from 6% to nearly 20%. Derelict coalfield land, mineral workings and farmland have been converted to woods. Other habitats are also being created or managed for wildlife. Timber use is being explored to promote a woodland economy that is both viable and sustainable.
