2020VISION
Welcome!

It may have seemed a bit quiet on the 2020VISION front just lately, but we're all doing duck impressions - you know, serene on top (ahem) and legs paddling like mad below. It's spring and the weather has been good. That means photographers everywhere (or at least those worth their salt like ours) are up at dawn, out at dusk and pretty much spent the rest of the time! The 2020VISION image bank is starting to bulge; our great team of photographers are setting new standards. Our next newsletter will provide an exclusive view of our most recent images and in the meantime, click here to read one of our favourite blog posts (amongst many) so far.

Suffolk Sandlings

OK, OK so February isn't the first month that springs to mind when you think about visiting a big Suffolk heathland repair job. But of course winter is the time when all the work is done, so we had to be there. Kitted out with all sorts of fancy machinery, an army of volunteers set to work improving this theatened lowland heath. Read Chris Gomersall's and David Tipling's blog here.

A good old Highland punch-up!

Spring is peak time for grouse shooting. No, no, not with a rifle, with a camera. Mark Hamblin broke the world sleep deprivation record as a series of 2am starts took him high into the hills of Deeside to await the arrival of the dawn patrol - the gurgling and spluttering black grouse. To witness these enigmatic birds going about their annual courtship display (and kicking the...ahem... out of each other in the process) is one of nature's true spectacles. Luckily Mark has brought back some stunning pix for us all to enjoy.

Rutland Water

On the face of it Rutland Water is just a big reservoir supplying drinking water to thousands of people. But it's also a massive wetlands in the making, already home to thousands of birds including ospreys. Rutland is a great example of vision and ambition meeting the needs of both wildlife and people.

Our phototeam were there in April and one of them, David Tipling, had this to say: "Where sheep grazed just 12 months ago is now a watery wonderland buzzing with life. It's awesome!"

On the (very) edge!

So what is Machair? Well it's kind of complicated but in essence it's a unique coastal grassland habitat which is globally rare (70% of machair is found in western Scotland - the very edge of the British Isles - as in next stop New York). Constantly pounded by the Atlantic, machair is great for wildlife and is associated with species in trouble like the previously widespread corncrake. Peter Cairns recently braved the inevitable wind and rain to bring back some great images of this dramatic coastline.

In the city too

Ecosystem repair needn't stop at city limits; in fact it musn't and in many places, it isn't. Our crack team will be covering the gobsmackingly exciting project focused on the Greater Thames Futurescape which is being rolled out across the London area showing that even in the heart of our cities, nature can thrive...if we let it.

By the way, we'll also be covering The Birmingham & Black Country Living Landscape Project and part of the Central Scotland Green Network - watch this space.

Tom Aikens
So what has food got to do with 2020VISION? Well quite alot actually. How, and from where, we produce our food is becoming increasingly important to all of us. It's probably fair to say that extracting food from our seas has not been done particularly sensitively in the past. Luckliy renowned chefs like Tom Aikens are great supporters of sustainable fishing...and in turn the need to convey the value of our marine ecosystems (hence Tom's support for 2020VISION). Keep an eye on our website for an exclusive interview with Tom soon!
Eco-schools
We're really excited to have support from Eco-schools (Scotland) and over the coming months will be exploring ways in which the partnership can be developed to take ecosystem thinking into Scotland's schools.
A Facebook milestone!

We have our first 1000 'Likes' on Facebook which isn't bad for the short time our page has been up there, so huge thanks to all who are supporting us. But of course we'd like more...and more, so we can tell you what we're up to and show you some rather splendid images too. If you don't yet 'Like' us please visit our page and sign up and tell your mates to do so as well. And that bloke who cleans your windows.

And don't forget we're on Twitter as well, follow our tweets here.

Scotland Outdoors and Outdoor Photography

You can find regular image/text features on our iWitness assignments in both Scotland Outdoors magazine and one of our other media partners, Outdoor Photography.

Exhibitions
It's now official: we're looking for exhibition venues - inside and outside - up and down the country. Between mid-2012 and 2015, we want to deliver the 2020VISION message to as many people as is humanly possible - it is after all in everyone's interest that we do. But to achieve this, we need help. We're looking to work with local partners to place our roadshow street gallery in major footfall locations with opportunity for visitor engagement. Edinburgh and London is already booked, who is next?

Download our exhibition brochure.

Join the journey
There are regular updates from our phototeam (including contributions from our Young Champions) to be found at our Photographers' Diaries blog.
Website update
Visitors to the 2020VISION website can now learn a lot more about our assignment locations. The more observant may have noticed there are more than 20 assignments listed and in truth, there are even more than shown (but don't tell anyone). Eventually each assignment will link to our photographers blog plus image and film galleries.
Nature of Scotland Awards

Nominations are now open for the first annual Nature of Scotland Awards. RSPB Scotland is hosting these new awards, which will recognise the best of Scottish nature conservation.  Click here to learn more.
